In between the line...

I was just riding home listening to "As it Happens" on NPR. I heard a story about the Native women in Manitoba who are mourning their loved ones found dead. This is a painful reality to many Native women, men, and children. It is a struggle to listen to the sad stories that never make CNN and continue over and over. When i was a child i was an outsider to the Native community that i was born for and related to. I was born in a PHS Hospital. i have seen "Rez Life" first hand and it haunts me. Although my people are said to be free and sovereign there is no peace in poverty. i ache in all the places that tears come from when i think of my many cousins and relatives who are literally stuck. All of that being said there is a beauty that comes from a relationship with the earth.

the road

am i really someone? am i. in the length of the day i find no time to contemplate my actions. i only feel pressed to continue, to march, to grin and bear. i think of my ultra talented and richly deep friends who i must admit i feel naked in the presence of and i wonder who they think i am that they would see me as a moment to spend. i think of the success in their lives and how i don't feel so sure that there is anything less than survival in my past. no real leaps or bounds, just hanging on for dear life hoping to make it to the next test of my will. my three babies are not my success but the beauty of creation and evidence of the use of my vessel, they are beautiful without me. my marriage although long and full is nothing more than what time has given us to do together. all of this loss, all of this gain, and not an ounce aware of what it has all been for; where is it going?

a moment.

i've been alive for nearly 35 years. today is a day that stands out so crazy for me. i am blessed to be a person working a full time job. in this job i meet so many people so many ways and i either connect for work or otherwise, rarely otherwise. in my place, there was a man, a beautiful man. a lovely man. and he was married to an equally lovely woman. they lived here in the united states for so long, and they were not here illegally, they came the way one ought to, with integrity and hard work. one day they were told that it was time for them to go home and renew their paperwork. our government didn't give them any time frame, there was no, "see you when you get back" there was only a barbq where we hugged them and loved them for the last time we would see them until whenever was. the day of our good bye, the going away party was at boom island in minneapolis, i drove back and forth and back and forth and finally asked for directions to a place i have been to at leas...

A Green Mask

Image
This last week i was able to be a part of the Soul'd Roots Media Justice and Health Institute in Denver, CO. Beside all of the beauty of being with amazing people that i respect and cherish i, OF COURSE, was having a number of secret battles. The third night of the institute was dedicated to a masquarade ball that the kids were responsible for planning and executing, as well as for them to have a good time with all of the attendees to the whole conference. One of the stipulations for getting into the party was that one "MUST HAVE A MASK TO ENTER". I was totally into the idea and i really wanted the kids to feel like i was respecting the parameters that they wanted me to uphold. Well, i had not had the opportunity to go out and even purchase the $1.99 bit that can be found at any local retailer. i decided that i would MAKE A MASK. i sure wish i hadn't been so embarrassed by my McGuyver tactics that i would have taken pictures to share. Anyway, i decided that i would u...
