A Green Mask

This last week i was able to be a part of the Soul'd Roots Media Justice and Health Institute in Denver, CO. Beside all of the beauty of being with amazing people that i respect and cherish i, OF COURSE, was having a number of secret battles.
The third night of the institute was dedicated to a masquarade ball that the kids were responsible for planning and executing, as well as for them to have a good time with all of the attendees to the whole conference. One of the stipulations for getting into the party was that one "MUST HAVE A MASK TO ENTER". I was totally into the idea and i really wanted the kids to feel like i was respecting the parameters that they wanted me to uphold.
Well, i had not had the opportunity to go out and even purchase the $1.99 bit that can be found at any local retailer. i decided that i would MAKE A MASK. i sure wish i hadn't been so embarrassed by my McGuyver tactics that i would have taken pictures to share. Anyway, i decided that i would use a perfume box that i had packed to carry some items in on the plane.
this is how it unfolded...
first i opened the seams on the box so that it was a flat piece of thick paper.
so, here was this cardboard boxy thing that i needed to cut into a little eye covering mask...i didn't have any scissors. i looked through the kitchen of the place that i was staying and found no scissors but a cork screw and an old school can opener. i decided that i would cut the box using the can opener to basically engrave a way for me to tear it into shape. this i tried with no avail since the box was a little thick. my next step was to take a wet washcloth and dampen the box to make cutting easier. i wet the rag up nice and soggy and placed it right over the box and for added absorption i put the cold iron over the whole project. while the box was getting soft i continued to get ready for the party. i asked my friend to bring me a pair of scissors. he took a while and i couldn't wait, i began to try cutting the box with the sharp can opener! meanwhile, my good friend came over to pick me up but he was too late with the scissors. He asked me what the heck i was doing and because of his own nerdy compulsions was forced to try and assist me in my endeavor. we decided that i could simply glue a piece over the eye and tadaaa there would be the mask only needing some string to keep it in place on my face. however, just as i had no scissors, i had no glue...what would i use? well, first we tried hair mousse, no luck. then i decided we could use shampoo, we would just use the hairdryer and change the consistency. so i ran to the hotel restroom and removed the dryer from the wall, my friend was all into it and plugged it in, too much voltage, wouldn't even turn on. so, we thought aha! the iron!!! no juice there. we began to discuss what could possibly help us get this mask made...we only needed string! i looked and looked, no string. and then it happened, that lovely thing sitting on my neck produced a thought! i quickly grabbed a grocery store plastic bag and began to tear it, suddenly i thought, use the scissors! so i cut the plastic bag into a great big rectangle and began to roll it in my palms while my friend tried to bore a hole in the sides of the "mask" to put the "string" into. we tried. no mask. i walked out of the room feeling kinda defeated. when we arrived at the party: NO ONE HAD A MASK ON, later i saw a few kids, but i would have had the shoddiest, greenest, dopest mask on record if i would have just had some glue, really some glue is all i needed.
